Last week was marked by the terrorist attacks in Brussels. This, combined with other episodes of pure consternation, led to an increased sense of insecurity among travelers.

But what to do if we find ourselves in the middle of a nightmare like that? Condé Nast Traveler gave some ideas that I highlight here:

  1. Notify your embassy where you are, your status (whether it is safe to need help), and plans to continue the journey. To simplify any process, before traveling consult the contacts of your embassy in the country you’re about to visit.
  2. Refer to Facebook Safety Check to make your family and friends know that you are well.
  3. Make sure you always have the opportunity to make calls or access the internet from your mobile phone. Even if you don’t use it in a normal situation, to avoid paying roaming, make sure everything is ok if you find yourself in an emergency and have to use it. Another solution may be to get a prepaid card when you arrive at your destination.
  4. Memorize your passport number or always walk around with a copy of it. You never know if you might need it.
